Haltown 2's history..

In 1995 magazines such as "Harpers Bizzarre", "Melody Maker" and "Maclean's" considered Halifax the "Next Seattle" and grunge band "Sloan" to be the leaders of the Halifax music scene from an "outside-looking-in" point of view.. but in East Coast Canada among longtime hip hop fans, DJ's, MCs and Graff artists who actually lived in Halifax & surrounding areas all of their life, those magazine comparisons & claims missed the mark completely.

Halifax had closer influences to NYC in the late 70's / early 80's much more than being compared to Seattle or anywhere else... Cafe Ole was our CBGB's / Disco Fever and the Khyber (next door) was our Dixie Club & while Jorun Bombay was musically spearheading the Halifax Hip Hop movement via Haltown Meltdown compilations & Shows, these releases kept the scene as pure to the original roots as it possibly could : 2 turntables, a mic, MC's who had DJ's (no dat machines) No bling, no gangster images, and no shiny suits. Everything was real + raw to the core and strictly about hip hop talent first and foremost. All due respect... there was no ''Seattle influence'' in Haltown.

Haltown 2 dropped at the height of Halifax's Hip Hop golden era and
the coming of age of a scene that was thriving yet finally self sustaining. Halifax in 1995 was at its most diverse, most creative & it's most vibrant. It stood on its own feet w/o the help of any outside labels or distributors, no factor grants or govt funding and no acknowledgement / barely any exposure from Muchmusic in Toronto (who in many cases refused to put Halifax's hip hop videos in regular rotation back to back with other Canadian rap artists) As a result, Halifax Hip Hop was musically & socially seperate from the rest of Canada and Haltown 2 was the sound of our isolation from Canada combined with our direct New York pipeline influences via WBLS's Rap Attack & WRKS's Mastermix Dance Party w/ Red Alert & Chuck Chillout.

Haltown Meltdown compilations marked the first time in Eastern Canada's musical history that an entire hip hop scene pulled forces together from all different areas & housing projects in Halifax from Uniacke Square to Dartmouth & Preston and stretching out as far as Truro, NS (and later extending to New Brunswick) no matter what race, age or crew / posse.. all appeared on one album. Before Haltown Vol 1, this never exsisted in the Maritimes. Haltown 2's influence and acknowledgement is still expanding almost 20 years later as the track "summajam" (aka Jorun's way) has recently appeared on DJ Jazzy Jeffs "Super 7's" mixtape and is played in DJ sets worldwide to this day.
