about

This is the 20th anniversary edition of Halifax's first ever hip hop compilation. Originally released in 1993, this compilation marked the first time ever in Halifax's history that a compilation of Halifax Hip Hop artists from all walks of life, races and from different boroughs came together on one album and was officially commerically released.

For almost a decade prior, there was a scene in Halifax struggling to
be heard and acknowledged. Many demo-tapes and tracks exsisted but none were commercially released in the form of a compilation that boasted an all star lineup of Halifax artists. CBC recorded 2 Halifax hip hop compilations before this which were schedueled to be commercially released but got canned due to funding and never saw the light of day. Aside from not being released, also excluded a lot of key people in the scene, showing how divided & far behind Halifax was to having a "true" scene.

As frustrating as it was, and after a major letdown from the lack of funding for the promised sequel to the infamous Canadian Hip Hop "Cold Front compilation" (Which Haltown Projex was schedueled to be on courtesy of MuchMusic's Johnbronski) the only way to release a hip hop album in Halifax and be unbiased was to do it on our own without being at the mercy of other peoples time & opportunities and most importantly, not exclude anyone who was talented and lived in Halifax. The big question was who was going to step up and make this happen?

By the time 1992 came around, Jorun and Haltown Projex had one last shot at shopping their demos to local record labels. Their last try was with indi grunge rock label Cinnamon Toast records (who were putting out vinyl 45's with local indi rock acts such as Bubaiskull and Jale) Robert Jeans, who worked at the label, loved what he heard and pitched the idea of putting out a Halifax hip hop record on Cinnamon Toast to his business partners at the label but unfortunately they declined and felt that Haltown musically had no place on their roster.
Robert, still determined to help Haltown get heard, parted from Cinnamon Toast and offered to fund a one compilation deal with Jorun Bombay & Haslam of Haltown Projex.

The deal was very basic : Haslam uses his radio show on CKDU FM to audition new hip hop acts and Jorun records 3-4 songs of each new artist, pick the best of the bunch to make a 20 song album and Robert Jeans would release it on his new Indi label outside of Cinnamon Toast records and Haslam would promote the album at the radio station under his DJ moniker "DJ Critical". There would be no promise of any money to be made from album sales, but to have a full album pressed and sitting on the shelves at local record stores was due to happen within 20 weeks of the agreement between Jorun Bombay, Haslam & Rob Jeans.
This would be a "trial run" to see if there was a market for hip hop to be commerically released in Halifax. From this opportunity, it was up to Haltown Projex & artists to set up their own shows, print off their own posters, plaster the city with their ads & spread out city wide and let Halifax know there was a scene here. In retrospect, this was a "meet us halfway" deal. The first and best offer we had thus far to prove ourselves.

In total, there was almost 50 songs to pick from. Only about 20 made the cut and the rest were either schedueled to be released on later compilations or just stayed in the vault. This 20th edition of Haltown Meltdown contains many of the original tracks on the OG release and some of the other tracks that got canned are now taking the place of a few of the OG tracks. The one thing that all of these songs have in common is the era they were recorded in which was between 1992-94.

This is the first original Halifax Hip Hop compilation to ever be released in Halifax's history. Many came after it and many make claims of having compilations from Halifax but make no mistake, Haltown Meltdown marked the very first time it EVER happened in the east coast of Canada and in Halifax entire musical history. There was none before this. Don't get it twisted! This is HISTORY.. not "his-story" or "her-story"

The artists : Jorun (Producer & DJ) Bonshah, Mod'rn World Thang, Haslam, Hip Club Groove, Fiz & Voodoo, Shingai, Product KVA, Bassment Unit, Hip Hop Players, Flexxman and Haltown Projex.
